Why its OK to Work Long Hours - The Muse
Why its OK to Work Long Hours - The MuseWhy its OK to Work Long Hours As Im writing this very article, its 930 PM on a Thursday. Ive already put in at least a solid 11 hours of work today and- in all honesty- I still feel like Im going pretty strong. I have another full day on the schedule for tomorrow, and will likely spend several more hours working over the weekend.Does that thought fill me with dread? Nope. Quite the opposite, actually. During an average week, I spend about 60 hours parked in front of my computer. Yes, its longer than the traditional workweek, but I really dont mind.Granted, Ill be the first to admit that my situations a bit different from somebody who works in an office. Im a freelancer, which means that- in addition to fulfilling that whole working in my pajamas clich- I also get to set my own hours, choose the projects Id like to work on, and occasionally even have trashy daytime television playing in the background. Its not the saatkorn as being surrounded by chatting co-workers and a boss breathing down my neck- I get that. (And Ill be the first to say that maybe Id feel a little differently about my demanding schedule if I was in that sort of scenario.) However, right now I love what I do, which means I spend a lot of time, well, doing it. Ive said before that being passionate about my work doesnt mean that I think every day is a walk in the park, but it does help to make those long hours far more tolerable- and sometimes even enjoyable. But, being that I make my living writing and reading an abundance of career advice, Im constantly surrounded by recommendations, tips, and phrases that look something like this (hey, Ive even written some of them)Maintain adequate work-life balance. Dont become a workaholic. Shut down at a certain time each evening. You should only work this number of hours in a day. Dont check your email on the weekends. Youre going to burn out.Listen, I understand it- this advice comes from a well-meaning place. I ne ver want to be the one to advocate letting your job consume your life, and I definitely dont want to glorify becoming a workaholic. However, I do feel the need to stand up and be a mouthpiece for those of us who work what others might consider crazy hours. Because seeing these tips over and over and over makes me feel guilty when I take a look back at my week and see that the majority of my time was spent working. And thats not fair to meDont get me wrong I believe work-life balance is important. But, much like the rest of your career, what you consider to be an adequate balance is personal. And if theres one thing I want you to realize, its this Its not anybody elses job to dictate what another persons idea of career happiness should look like. If your current schedule truly fulfils you, who is anybody else to tell you otherwise? When it comes to our work lives, I see this same principle come up again and again- the idea of living up to someone elses standards and expectations, rath er than your own individual ideals. You should be on this career track, or youre doing it all wrong. You should do this before heading to the office every morning, or your day will be off to a bad start. You should want to chase promotion after promotion and climb that proverbial ladder, or youre going nowhere. But, when you boil it all down, what all of us really want is simply a job that makes us happy. And, ultimately, the key to finding that is knowing yourself and then using that knowledge to build the career and the life that you want- whether that fits with the standard advice youve grown used to hearing or not. Because, at the end of the day, nobody knows you the way that you do.

Lee Iacocca Engineering Icon
Lee Iacocca Engineering Icon Lee Iacocca Engineering Icon While Lee Iacocca may be recognized for his shrewd business sense as arguably the best-known U.S. automotive executive since Henry Ford, it welches his engineering training that gave him an appreciation for the importance of product quality.I know that his background as an engineer paid off handsomely for Ford Motor Company and for Chrysler, says Keith Crain, editor-in-chief of automotive industry newspaper Automotive News, who has followed Iacocca since the 1970s and considers him a friend. Even though he has been known as a product guy and a marketing guy his whole life, that basic (engineering) training gave him a wonderful sense of product.A first-generation American born in 1924 to working class parents in the steel-making region of Pennsylvania, Iacocca had a stellar career, leading both of those giant auto makers.Training at FordAfter graduating with a B.S. in industrial engineering from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA , Iacocca was awarded a prestigious Wallace Memorial Fellowship from Princeton University, where he earned an M.S. in mechanical engineering, and in 1946 was hired as an engineer by Ford. Very quickly, he realized that he didnt want to make cars, he wanted to sell them, especially after working on a mechanical engineering drawing of a clutch spring in a training course at Fords large River Rouge plant near Detroit.Within a couple of years, his bosses agreed, and he was transferred to a Ford district sales office in eastern Pennsylvania. By 1956, he was serving as manager of Fords Philadelphia sales district when he came up with an imaginative promotion that involved an easier payment plan for customers. The idea was something like $56 a month in 1956 for your new Ford, says Crain. He aligned the payment amount with the year, and he traktement the hell out of Fords in that zone, Crain adds. The districts sales went from worst to best in three months. That got the attention of Ford ma nagement, and he was transferred to headquarters in Dearborn, MI, ultimately finding his true calling in product development. The first-generation 1965 Ford Mustang.Image Wikimedia CommonsHe rose quickly, becoming the youngest man to head the Ford division, was named vice president of the car and truck group in 1965, executive vice president of Ford North American automotive operations in 1967, and president of Ford Motor Co. in 1970. Known as the Father of the Mustang, Iacocca spearheaded the design project of this sporty, moderately priced car that became an instant hit in 1964 and platzdeckchen sales records.Mechanical KnowledgeCrain also credits Iacocca with coming up with the idea of what was known internally at Ford as a points car. This was a drivable prototype based on mechanical engineering drawings that had all the important points so that both the interior and exterior could be evaluated, Crain says. Now its fairly common, but it wasnt in the 70s, and I think a lot had to do with Iacoccas mechanical knowledge, he adds.Built up to two years prior to production, the cars were driven around by Ford people. If something didnt feel right, they could change it and make sure the production car didnt have any of those problems, Crain explains. Iacocca understood that, You can look at an interior and you can even sit in an interior but its only when you get in a car and drive it that you might say this thing hits me in the shoulder or I have a hard time getting to the switches. Thats where Iacoccas mechanical engineering background helped him tremendously in his career even though he didnt follow an engineering career path.Iacocca has said that becoming president of Ford in my forties was a dream-come-true for the son of immigrants. While the 1960s and 1970s were excellent years for Ford, it all ended quickly in 1978. Henry Ford II fired Iacocca as the company was coming off posting a $2 billion profit. It was an action that some say was inevitable because th e two strong personalities could not co-exist.Four months later, Iacocca turned up at Chrysler and the following year became CEO, rescuing the automaker from bankruptcy. Iacocca again called on a combination of his engineering training and customer insight to think about what new types of vehicles should be developed. On his watch, which lasted until he retired in 1993, the company introduced the economical K-cars to compete against fuel-efficient, low-cost Japanese imports revived the convertible market with the introduction of the LeBaron convertible created a new market segment called the minivan, which was a precursor to the SUV and was the first U.S. automaker to make drivers side airbags standard equipment.Aside from the major contributions he has made to the auto industry and American business, Iacocca is a best-selling author and has been involved in many philanthropic activities.Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. Here are 15 business texting rules to live by
Here are 15 business texting rules to live by Here are 15 business texting rules to live by Like it or loathe it, people are spending an increasing amount of time on their phones, and continuous advancements in technology â" particularly regarding social media and communication â" means it can be hard to switch off from work and achieve a healthy work-life balance. But for all of its flaws, itâs this same technology that allows us to stay in touch with friends, family, colleagues and peers so easily â" itâs literally at the touch of a button!Texting is now one of the most convenient ways of communicating in business, but it brings its own set of challenges and you could overstep etiquette boundaries without even realizing it.To clear up any doubts or ambiguities, the office experts at LondonOffices.com have compiled a list of 15 business texting rules that all professionals should keep in mind and live by.Amongst them are stark warnings to always check the recipient and when using the voice-to-text feature, and to never send bad news via text. The commercial property experts also advise against using emojis when texting your clients, and to keep your abbreviations under control.Chris Meredith from LondonOffices.com commented: âIt can be difficult to ascertain what is and isnât acceptable when it comes to texting or instant messaging your clients and colleagues.âThere are unspoken rules and procedures to follow which may not always seem obvious, so hopefully our list will help to clear things up.âHere are 15 business texting rules to live by:1. Watch your abbreviationsA good rule of thumb is to only type what you would be comfortable saying out loud, and only use abbreviations that are widely known such as âlolâ (laugh out loud) or ânpâ (no problem). Also, steer away from any that could be deemed unprofessional, like âwtfâ for example.2. Be aware of your toneTry to write in complete sentences to prevent sounding abrupt, and always read your message out loud to make sure it doesnât come across too harsh.3. Keeps the caps offS omewhere along the line emailing, texting, and social messaging in capital letters has come to be perceived as shouting and as such will only annoy recipients. Just as you (hopefully) wouldnât shout at business contacts face to face, donât do it by text.4. Keep emojis under controlEvery piece of communication is a reflection of your professionalism, including a simple text. So, even though there are hundreds of fun emojiâs, reserve them for your personal correspondence instead.5. Check the recipientIf youâve ever accidentally sent a text to the wrong person, youâll know how confusing and potentially embarrassing it can be. Those autosuggest functions on your phone are great for the most part, but it can lead to confusion if contacts have similar names. So, check, check and check again that your message is going to the right person or people before you send it.6. Never send bad news via textThe bottom line is that texting is too casual a medium to give bad news. Itâs diff icult to know what tone youâre giving off in a text message, so itâs safer to stick to only good news when sending texts to people in your professional network.7. Donât change meeting times or venues in a textIf youâre going to change a meeting time or venue at the last minute, give the person a call instead â" otherwise they may not check their phones in time.8. Always double check when using the voice-to-text featureMany smartphones have the voice-to-text feature which allows you to dictate your message into your phoneâs microphone where it is then converted into a text message. This seems super quick and easy but in reality, you have no idea what sounds your phone may be picking up. So, always double check your message before pressing âsendâ.9. Pay attention to timingsThis oneâs simple â" limit texting to work hours. Sending a text after hours signals urgency, so wait until the next business day to relay your message. You wouldnât call a client with a great id ea right before you climbed into bed for the evening, so donât text them at that hour either.10. Know when to pick up the phoneAnything complex that might require further explanation should be handled with an email or a phone call.11. Keep it briefIf your message is more than a couple of sentences in length, a phone call or email is probably better.12. Reply promptlyTexting often conveys a sense of immediacy, so when you receive a message from your boss or a client, respond in a timely manner. On the other hand, when a text is emotional, give yourself some time to think your response through. The speed and convenience of texting is why we love it, but donât let it work against you.13. Sign your messagesIn a business texting situation, you canât be sure that the recipient has your contact details saved. If they donât know who you are, they may even ignore the message. So, simply add your name or initials at the end of the message to make it clear who the text is coming from.1 4. Put it awayBeing glued to your phone takes away from your professional image and can be quite distracting, so just as you wouldnât check your email every 10 seconds, give your phone a rest so you can observe your environment and engage with others.15. Check display picsSome instant messaging services like WhatsApp allow you to upload your own display image or icon, so make sure yours would be deemed professional by anyone you might be messaging. This article was originally published on YourCoffeeBreak.co.uk.

How to Integrate Breastfeeding Into Your Work Life How to Integrate Breastfeeding Into Your Work Life Employment is possibly the biggest obstacle for a long-term breastfeeding relationship between a new mom and her baby. But many working moms before you have done it, and you can, too. Most new working moms who want to breastfeed aim to do so for as long as they can. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for the first year of your babys life. So if you want to keep breastfeeding after you return to work, you will have to figure out how to integrate pumping into your workday. Choose the Right Pump The first step is to find a breast milk pump that works for you. Before you purchase a pump: Check whether your health insurance will cover the cost: According to the federal Affordable Care Act that was signed into law in 2010, insurance companies are required to cover the cost of a breast pump and related supplies. Contact your health insurance company to find out the specific brands or types that are covered.Determine how you would like to power your pump: There are three different ways to do so: manually (by hand), battery, and electric. A manual pump obviously requires more work on your part than the other two options. Decide whether you want a pump that works on both breasts at the same time or one breast at a time: A double, electrically powered breast pump is your best bet for pumping efficiently. Two popular ones are the Medela Pump In Style and the Ameda Purely Yours. The most powerful type is a hospital-grade pump that can drain your breasts in just a few minutes. You can also opt for a hands-free pumping bra that lets you type on a computer or hold a book while pumping. Make a Stockpile of Breast Milk Start pumping as soon as you can after you recover from childbirth. Many moms find theyre ready to start pumping at around four to six weeks postpartum. Thats also a good time to introduce your baby to a bottle. When pouring your milk into a breast milk storage bag, hold on to that bag tightly. Its very easy to cry over your spilled milk because youre working hard to produce it. Store two to three ounces per bag when youre starting out. You wouldnt want to defrost six or eight ounces when your baby ends up drinking only two. When you store bags in your freezer, lay them flat. That makes them easier to stack and also easier to defrost because theres no milk caught in the creases of the plastic. Gerber, Lansinoh, and Playtex make breast milk storage bags that will hold up to eight ounces. Medela makes bags that can attach directly to your pump. Write the date and the amount you pumped on the storage bag. This is important because breast milk can be used three to six months after its been frozen. Start keeping track of how much your baby drinks in one sitting and be prepared for the amount to increase suddenly if theyre having a growth spurt. This way, youll eventually be able to gauge how much milk you will need to cover a workday. Determine When to Fit In Pumping Sessions It can be hard to slate in a pumping session between rounds of nursing a hungry newborn. If your baby predictably sleeps for five or six hours at night, you can pump a couple of hours after their bedtime. If they take a long afternoon nap, pump as soon as they fall asleep. You can also try pumping right after their first morning feeding. Dont worry if your baby seems unsatisfied with their feedings after you start pumping. In a few days, your body will adjust and start making more milk for both feedings and pumpings. You could also try pumping right after youve fed your baby throughout the day. Your body will recognize youre empty, and you will produce plenty more milk for the next feeding. Use your new-mother intuition to continue fitting in pumping sessions. There will be some days when you can and other days when you cant. Breastfeed During the Workday if Possible Once you return to work, breastfeeding is the best way to keep stimulating your breasts to produce milk. If you can negotiate flexible hours or work from home with a babysitter for one or two days a week, youre in luck. If your childcare is close to your office, stop by on your lunch break to nurse your baby. Make sure your childs caregivers understand not to feed your baby in the late morning so hell be hungry when you arrive. Even better, ask them to call you when your baby seems ready to feed, and you can go for a nursing session. Figure Out an At-Work Pumping Schedule Lactation consultants recommend that you pump once for every feeding your baby has while youre apart. For most moms, that means three or four times during a workday. Remember that this is just a recommendation; all bodies are different and respond differently to breast pumping. The Affordable Care Act also requires employers to give you reasonable break times to pump. Before you talk to your manager about your breaks, figure out how long theyll need to be. Time how long it takes for you to get to your pumping location, pump, clean up, and return to your desk. You might want to factor in a bathroom break before or after your pumping session. This could all add up to 15â"20 minutes. If you can take three or four breaks during the day, start with that to see how much milk you get. If you can take only one or two breaks, that will have to be good enough. Remember, as time progresses, your milk supply will start to dwindle, so these pumping sessions wont affect your schedule for long. Find a Private Place to Pump Where you pump depends largely on your office setup. Check your state laws regarding expressing breast milk. Many states require employers to provide break times and a private location for pumping. Talk to your human resources representative or manager about logistics. If your employer has a lactation room, youll feel comfortable because no one can bother you and youll have everything you need, including an electric outlet and a sink to wash out your pump equipment. If you have a private office, you can simply close the door to pump. This is the easiest scenario for fitting in three or four sessions in a day. Tricks to Increase Milk Supply For many moms, pumping is simply not as efficient as nursing your baby to increase milk supply. So dont stress out if you pump less than your baby is drinking during the day. Feeling stressed can affect your milk supply. If your milk supply starts to dwindle, you can dip into the freezer stash you made before your maternity leave ended. Just because your milk supply is less one day doesnt mean it will stay like that. There are things you can try to boost your levels back up so you feel confident and less stressed. Try to be patient. It may take your body a few days to respond to these tricks. Look at pictures of your baby: Store a few baby pictures in your pump bag or take pictures of your baby every morning so you can look at them on your phone while you pump. The imagery may stimulate your breasts to let down more quickly. Pump a bit longer than normal: If youve been pumping for 15 minutes at a time, try 30 minutes. You may see two or even three separate letdowns and, overall, you will increase your milk supply.Try a power pump method: Pump for 10 minutes, wait a few minutes, pump another 10 minutes, wait a few minutes, and then pump another 10 minutes. You should experience three or more separate letdowns and produce more milk overall. Because this power pump will probably take longer than your scheduled break, try this method during the weekend. While pumping, massage your breasts in the direction of the nipple: Start on the top right of your breast, and using your middle, ring, and pointer fingers, push down slightly and move toward your nipple. It will feel like you are pushing the milk out of your breast. See if you can add an extra pumping session to your day: First thing in the morning may be best because its the longest time youve gone without pumping. You could also try one last session before bed. Try to get more rest: It may be easier said than done, but getting more sleep is likely to result in an uptick in milk production. When youre exhausted, your body definitely wont make as much milk. Last but not least, stay hydrated: Buy an extra large water bottle and always keep it with you. The more you drink, the better you will feel, and the easier your milk will let down. Speaking of drinking, stay away from alcohol. Some people claim that beer helps, but it actually dehydrates you. Streamline Cleaning and Packing Youll get more rest if you spend less time washing dirty bottles and pump pieces. Buy duplicate pumping sets so you can clean in batches at the end of the workday. Or if you have access to a microwave, try the steam-cleaning bags sold by Medela. Before you go to bed, put out your pumping bra and pack your breast pump, clean pump pieces, and bottles. Try packing each set in a large ziplock bag so you can easily take them out at work. Dont Judge Yourself The most disappointing thing you could do in your quest to extend breastfeeding is to obsess about your milk supply. Give yourself a break! Supplementing with formula is a perfectly healthy way to feed your child. Any amount of breast milk youre able to make is better than nothing and will give your baby wonderful nutrition and immunity protections. In the end, how much milk you pump doesnt determine your worth as a mother. Your child will be better off with you as a happy, responsive, loving mother than the worlds most productive wet nurse.

5 science-backed ways to say no without feeling guilty and hurting someones feelings
5 science-backed ways to say no without feeling guilty and hurting someone's feelings 5 science-backed ways to say no without feeling guilty and hurting someone's feelings Saying no to people can be extremely difficult, especially when we expect others to react negatively. In order to avoid feeling guilty for offending others, we often give in to peopleâs demands. But this leads to overwhelm, stress and loss of self-confidence, because we spend more time doing things for others, instead of doing things we need for ourselves.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!By learning how to say no to others, you can reclaim valuable time and energy to focus on what matters most to you. Before we discuss the five best strategies to achieve this, itâs important to first resolve a bigger question: Why do we say yes when we really mean no?Why We Say Yes When We Mean NoâYou have the right to say no without feeling guilty.â? Manuel J. SmithIn July 1961- three months after the trial of Adolf Eichmann (a former Nazi SS Officer and major organizer of the Holocaus t)- Professor Stanley Milgram began to conduct experiments in the basement of Linsly-Chittenden Hall at Yale University, to answer a puzzling question:âCould it be that Eichmann and his million accomplices in the Holocaust were just following orders? Could we call them all accomplices?â 1Or to put it another way: how far will people go in obeying instructions if it involves harming another person? To answer this, Milgram recruited 40 participants aged between 20 and 50 years old and instructed them to draw lots to help decide whether they were the âteacherâ or âlearner,â in the experiment. 2The teacher was taken by a researcher into a small room and sat down in front of an electric âshock generatorâ and a row of switches marked from 15 volts (Slight Shock) to 375 volts (Danger: Severe Shock) to 450 volts (XXX).They were instructed to read a long list of word pairs to the learner, who sat in a separate room next door.If the learner guessed correctly theyâd push a b utton and move onto the next list of word pairs. If not, the teacher would deliver an electric shock to the learner- 15 volt increments all the way up until 450 volts.Unknown to the participants, the experiment was fake: the subject was always the âteacherâ and the âlearnerâ (a confederate called Mr. Wallace) was never actually shocked by the electric switches.Up until the shock level of 300 volts, the teacher would hear the learner pounding on the wall, crying out in pain, complaining about their heart condition and refusing to answer questions any longer. After this shock level, the learner would no longer respond to electric shocks.Whenever the participant refused to deliver the next round of shocks, the researcher would give a series of four prods in order: âplease continue,â âthe experiment requires you to continue,â âit is absolutely essential that you continue,â and âyou have no other choice but to continue.âThe experiment ended whenever the teacher re fused to participate any longer or 450 volts electric shock was delivered three times. The results of the test was shocking.65% (two-thirds) of the participants administered the highest level of electric shock? 450 volts. All participants continued until at least 300 volts. There have been several follow up studies to verify the experiment, but the conclusion remains the same: humans tend to follow orders given by an authority figure, even if it costs another personâs life. 3According to Milgramâs agency theory, mindless obedience to authority has been ingrained from birth through family, school and the workplace, in order to maintain social order within our hierarchical society. 4In his classic book, Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion (audiobook), Dr. Robert Cialdini suggests that authority is one of six triggers that influence us to say yes when we mean no.The other five triggers are: Reciprocation: We tend to feel obliged to return favors offered to us. Commitment and Consistency: We strongly desire to appear consistent in our behavior, and tend to stand by previous commitments, even if theyâre wrong. Social Proof: We tend to look to other people similar to ourselves to inform our decisions. Liking: Weâre more likely to agree to offers from people who we like as a person. Scarcity: We tend to desire things that are unavailable or in limited supply. By simply being aware of these triggers, you can significantly improve the odds of saying no to other peopleâs requests. Here are five science-backed strategies to help you say no to people without offending them.5 Effective Ways to Say No Without Feeling Guilty1. Use the words âI donâtâ instead of âI canât.âIn four studies published in the Journal of Consumer Research, researchers examined the effect of using the words âI canâtâ versus âI donâtâ when resisting temptation. 5During one of these studies, the researchers tracked how well 30 women stuck to their health goals over a period of 10 days. The results: eight (of 10) participants in the âdonâtâ condition stuck to their health goals for the full 10 days, whilst only one participant (of 10) in the âcanâtâ condition did so.According to the study author Vanessa Patrick, professor of marketing at the C. T. Bauer College of Business, âSaying âI canâtâ connotes deprivation, while saying â I donâtâ makes us feel empowered and better able to resist temptation.â 62. Avoid communicating with negative emotionsAccording to Daniel Goleman, a psychologist and expert on emotional intelligence, humans have a ânegativity biasâ towards email and text messaging. 7Goleman argues that even if the sender of an email feels positive about their message, ânegativity biasâ will lead the receiver to interpret the message in a neutral tone.Likewise, if the sender feels neutral about their message, the receiver tends to interpret it negatively. And if the sender feels negative, the receiver interprets it even more negatively than intended. To counteract the negativity bias when saying no to someone via email or text messaging, ensure that you avoid sending messages when youâre angry or frustrated, and use positive words of encouragement with empathy in your response i.e. âthank you forâ¦â or âgood work onâ¦âBy carefully using positive words in your messages, yo uâll minimize the effects of the negativity bias and maintain goodwill with the recipient.3. Watch your body language. In 1971, Albert Mehrabian, an expert on body language and Professor Emeritus of Psychology in UCLA, published a book called Silent Messages, where he reveals the powerful effects of non-verbal communication in influencing the reactions of others. 8According to Mehrabian, when we convey our feelings to others, three factors influence their liking towards us: words (7%), tone of voice (38%), and body language (55%).If our words, tone of voice and body language arenât congruent when we say no to others, theyâre likely to get offended and react negatively to the message.Incongruent body language tends to be either too aggressive or too weak, whilst congruent body language is confident and positive.4. Pre-plan your âno.âHundreds of studies on âimplementation-intentionsâ have shown that by simply writing down when and where you plan to implement a behaviour , you could double the odds of following through on your plans. 9You may choose to pre-plan your ânoâ in the following implementation intention format:IF [specific person makes specific request at specific location and time], THEN [my specific response].For example, âIF [Ben walks up to my desk at 11 a.m. tomorrow to make an urgent request], THEN [I will let him know Iâll get back to him by 1 p.m].âBy pre-committing your actions, you can make it automatically easier to gracefully say ânoâ on a regular basis.5. Avoid using the word âno.âAccording to Dr. Robert Cialdini, âThere is a natural human tendency to dislike a person who brings us unpleasant information, even when that person did not cause the bad news. The simple association with it is enough to stimulate our dislike.â 10One of the best ways to avoid this negative reaction, is to avoid using the word ânoâ and provide an alternative solution instead.By providing others with alternatives to achieve t heir objectives, you can help them make progress without getting involved and feeling guilty.Say No to Say Yes to SuccessâThe difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything.â ? Warren BuffettThereâs always an opportunity cost of our choices: when we say yes to one thing, weâre simultaneously saying no to another thing. We often fail to realize that by saying yes to requests from others, weâre actually saying no to our priorities and goals.By learning how to say no, you can effectively prioritize your time and say yes to the things that matter most to you. This article first appeared on Mayo Oshin. Low-Cost Online Training to Add to Your Resume
Low-Cost Online Training to Add to Your Resume Low-Cost Online Training to Add to Your Resume If youre finding it difficult to get interviews for the kind of role you want, dont worry- there are a lot of things you can do to position yourself for success. Your resume is a reflection of your professional experience and qualifications. You can add online training, seminars, and other educational resources to your resume to bolster your work experience or make it easier to make the transition to a new career. Many of these are available for little to no cost. Online training, especially in the form of free courses, doesnât carry the same weight as a degree or certification, but it can still help you to prove that you have a passion for your field, and are willing to learn and put in the hours necessary to get the job done. Itâs also a great way to flesh out a resume with little or no actual work experience. Starting a career with nothing more than your high school education on your resume can be limiting. Taking an online class that helps you understand the industry youâre entering makes a big difference. Where can you go for this training? Is there a difference between online training providers? Finally, how do you include it on your resume? Which online training can you add to a resume? Letâs start by addressing the obvious: Stating that you watched a YouTube video about Web development will not improve your chances of getting an interview. However, there is online training from credible and recognized sources, and it doesnât have to break the bank. You can find a lot of great online training at a low cost from the following: Lynda CreativeLive Pluralsight Alison Udemy OSTraining Treehouse Khan Academy You can also find excellent online classes and certification courses offered by colleges, universities, and even some corporations. Community colleges can be especially well priced. Some online courses, such as those provided by Khan Academy, are absolutely free and offer incredibly insightful and high-quality training. You can also list webinars and other online teaching events you have attended. For example, if you are applying for a job as a photographerâs assistant, having attended webinars hosted by a respected photographer doesnât hurt. How to add online training to your resume Online training and webinars shouldnât sit at the same level as your degree or formal certifications. Instead, consider creating a section for this information with a title such as âSpecialized Training,â âAdditional Education,â or âProfessional Development.â Make sure you include the type of online training you completed, the name of the course or webinar, the name of the instructor and/or hosting organization, and the date you completed the training. Here is an example of this section as it would appear in your resume: Specialized Training Webinars Better Direction, Better Movies, Steven Spielberg, 2014 How to Make Great Movies, Pixar Animation, 2015 CreativeLive Courses Movie Making and You, George Lucas, 2015 Khan Academy Courses Intro to HTML/CSS: Making Webpages, 2015 A hiring manager may ask you to provide some kind of documentation that you completed the courses and/or attended the webinars. This is a good sign. It means you are being considered seriously enough to warrant checking your credentials, and that they are willing to accept online training experience. This is where it can tricky. Most online courses provide a receipt when you purchase access, or a certificate of completion you can print out once you have finished the course. Free online training providers may track your progress and display your completed training in a public profile you can send along to the hiring manager. In any case, itâs important that you be honest about your online training. Signing up for a webinar does not mean you completed it, and while it might be tempting to add as many online courses as possible to your resume, you are best off listing only your most relevant, recent, and completed training. Additional tips If you have online training that is more than a few years old, you should consider removing it from your resume. Online training has a much shorter shelf life than a college education. Timeliness is one of the key advantages taking these classes give you. Try to find online training provided by identifiable instructors who you can name in your resume. Receiving training from a nameless instructor doesnât carry the same weight as a recognized and respected leader in the industry. Attending a webinar hosted by Steven Spielberg means more than attending one hosted by a sophomore film student. This is one area where sites such as CreativeLive offer a distinct advantage. They provide multi-day courses led by top professionals in their respective industries. Today, you are no longer limited by your physical location. Education and training options continue to expand and improve, so if you cant get a job interview, these training opportunities may be right for you.

How to Succeed When Your Boss Doesnt Have Time for You
How to Succeed When Your Boss Doesnât Have Time for You How to Succeed When Your Boss Doesnât Have Time for You For employees who are used to being micromanaged or butting heads with their boss, having a manager who keeps his or her distance may seem like a dream- or at least, a pretty good problem to have. But to really succeed in your job- especially if youâre brand new to the industry or job function- itâs important to get quality, one-on-one, focused feedback and coaching from your boss. So, when your boss doesnât have time for that- when he or she is constantly rushing from meeting to meeting or so involved in the big project of the moment that none of your conversations go beyond a cursory greeting- you may be able to get by, but you wonât learn how to really thrive. When I made a recent career move, I suddenly found myself with a boss who didnât seem to have time to manage me. He was constantly traveling between the companyâs several locations, so I saw him very rarely, and being in and out of the office, he wasnât readily accessible for quick questions or advice, let alone involved coaching. And so, I usually went without. Not only does this lack of attention leave you feeling frustrated and ignored, but it can seriously stall your career growth. Because if youâre not moving forward in your career by constantly improving your work and developing your skills, you wonât be first in line- or in line at all- for any raises or promotions. If youâre not getting the attention you need from your boss, I learned there are two main routes you can take: Take charge of the issue with your boss or find another source for feedback and coaching. (Or, cover all your bases and do both!) Hereâs how. Option #1: Take Charge Truthfully, thereâs no good excuse that a manager can possibly have for not managing. Sure, bosses are busy- but their primary job function is to manage others. So if youâre not getting what you need, you shouldnât have to just suffer through it. If you donât already have a weekly or bi-weekly one-on-one with your manager set up, take the initiative to put a standing meeting on your bossâ calendar. That way, even if you arenât able to pop into your managerâs office whenever you need something, youâll have dedicated time to talk through issues and ask for the feedback you need. Plus, your manager will likely appreciate you taking the lead. The reality is, your boss probably meant to set up a one-on-one with you at some point and truly does want to help you- but needs the time set aside to do it. Then, when youâre in that meeting, donât leave it to your boss to bring up coaching opportunities. Make it easy on him or her and bring a specific list of things you want to discuss. By guiding the discussion, youâll be able to hone in on the topics and assignments that youâre most unsure about. It wonât result in an always-accessible boss who showers you with feedback- but youâll be in a much better position than where you started. Option #2: Find Feedback Elsewhere If that doesnât work, the good news is that most offices are full of other resources that, used appropriately, can provide a good stand-in for the coaching youâre not getting from your manager. In my situation, for example, there was another department manager who saw that I was struggling and reached out to see if there was anything he could do to help. I started running some of my project first drafts by him, and he would give me feedback in return. Over time, heâs become a mentor and a much more constant source of guidance and feedback than my boss is. Of course, you have to handle this situation delicately. While itâs great to find a mentor, you have to be respectful of his time, recognizing that he has his own direct reports to manage, as well as his own responsibilities to fulfill. But if you can find another person whose advice and coaching you trust and who is willing to make time for you, take that opportunity. Your colleagues can be helpful, too. Once I started to get to know my teammates, I was able to pinpoint a few whose opinions I value, who have been successful in their own roles, and who were willing to spend some extra time helping me succeed in my role. For example, one co-worker had actually been in my exact position before I came on board, but had since moved up to a more senior role. Knowing she had some expertise in my job function, Iâd occasionally ask her to take a look at my assignments before I turned them into my manager. Sheâd ask insightful questions and give thoughtful feedback- which helped me learn how to do my work better. Again, this is a resource that you donât want to overuse- your co-workers have their own work to do and canât possibly look at every one of your assignments in addition to that. But, line up a few co-workers you trust, and you wonât have to burden any one person with your questions and requests for feedback. Plus, youâll get multiple perspectives, which can help you widen your own outlook and improve beyond any one personâs experience. Getting constant coaching is key to moving forward in your career- so donât settle for just getting by if your manager doesnât have the time to provide that feedback. Try one approach or both, but donât let a distant boss get in the way of your career advancement. Photo of calendar courtesy of Shutterstock.

How federal resume differs from standard resumes for civilian positions
How federal resume differs from standard resumes for civilian positions How federal resume differs from standard resumes for civilian positions How federal resume differs from standard resumes for civilian positions Sometimes a job seeker needs to write a different resume when seeking a new position. The need for a new resume is not necessarily because the applicant acquired some additional qualifications. Many people do not like going to school that often. A new resume is dictated by the type of job the applicant is applying for. courtesy of P. Stanley unsplash.com Federal Resume A federal resume is a resume that is used for purposes of seeking civilian jobs in the federal government. Many a job seeker have missed the opportunity to work for the federal government because they use standard resumes which simply wonât do for positions in the federal government. When applying for work in the federal government, the federal resume is the main and usually the most important document in determining whether the qualified applicant will be shortlisted for an interview or not. Different jobs in the federal government demand that the job seeker provides certain information that is specific to the job. This means that to be successful, the resume has to be tailored specifically for the job as per instructions. Among the first thing that evaluators look for in the resumes is whether these resumes provide all the required information. If the resumes do not provide such information, no further evaluation is done on the suitability of the candidate, their application simply gets trashed. Evaluation of federal resumes is done in a predetermined manner for all resumes. Owing to the sheer number of applications that federal jobs tend to apply, it is necessary for there to be a uniform method of evaluation. The system used demands that all information be presented in a certain way by all the applicants. If an applicant presents complete information but in a different format from the one prescribed, there is a very high possibility that they do not get past the preliminary stages of evaluation. Required Information Information on the position applied for: Unlike in the private sector, the federal government usually announces many vacancies at the same time. Usually the vacancies fall in the same departments. For this reason, it is imperative for the resume to specify the title of the job being sought by name and by a code usually provided. When the tittle of the job and the code are not indicated properly the application may be misplaced Personal Information: In this section the applicant provides information that is similar to information on the standard resume. Usually, name, date of birth, identification, citizenship and so on. The difference between the federal and standard resume in this section is that the federal resume requires the applicant to indicate the highest federal position they have ever held. Education: In a federal resume, education is indicated from secondary level onwards. Qualifications acquired are listed starting from the latest to the earliest. This is usually the case even with many standard resumes. Sometimes with standard resumes, an applicant may skip their secondary qualifications and still be eligible for evaluation. Failure to indicate secondary qualifications leads to disqualification for federal jobs. Work experience: These qualifications are usually listed from the most recent going back. In this section the applicant should indicate the tittle of the position held, duties pertaining to that job. Employer details including their addresses and contacts are also expected to be a part of this section. Other qualifications: In this section, other qualifications that an applicant may have acquired are listed. They include everything from certifications to licenses to experience and other things of that nature. Conclusion Many job seekers do not know the seriousness with which resumes are taken in federal job applications. Lack of this crucial piece of information condemns qualified people to have seeking federal jobs as a fulltime occupation. It is for the purposes of paying attention to these details that the services of a professional resume writer are needed.

President of ManpowerGroup on why employers need to be transparent
President of ManpowerGroup on why employers need to be transparent President of ManpowerGroup on why employers need to be transparent Ladders recently spoke with Becky Frankiewicz, North American President of workforce solutions firm ManpowerGroup who previously held a variety of senior leadership roles at PepsiCo across its portfolio of brands including head of Quaker Foods North America. Read on as she discusses recruiting challenges, how businesses can secure the best talent, and which markets currently have the strongest hiring intent. What are the biggest challenges, from a technical and/or business standpoint, that those in recruiting and talent acquisition face nowadays?I meet regularly with business leaders from companies across sizes and industries and I hear a common challenge â" companies are struggling to find and retain the skilled people they need to be competitive.
